Building a society for the smallest of us – Paulig Group funds the Finnish Children’s Hospital

6.6.2014

In Finland Paulig has traditionally celebrated the Day of the Good Coffee on 6th of June. Usually some good news is announced on that special day, as for example the selection of the new Paula PR person and the new Juhla Mokka tins. This year the good news is that Paulig Group has made a long-term commitment to improve the Finnish society, beginning from the smallest and most vulnerable of us – children.

“We are all parts in a collaborative effort that applies not only to ourselves and our company but also to the whole of modern society with all its many operating procedures”, said Eduard Paulig in the 1940s.

Supporting the community and being part of building the future are deep in Paulig Group set of values and goes back in history. Mannerheim League for Child Welfare constructed Children’s Castle in 1940s. Paulig took part in the voluntary work by packaging the coffee that Mannerheim League got as a donation from the US. The coffee was packed unroasted in small 250g packages. A lottery was organized with coffee as the price. As coffee was still a rationed product, it was a desired good to win. Through the lottery the project profited 1,2 million marks (former Finnish currency). Children’s Castle was inaugurated in 1948.

When the hospital was standing ready, it was one of the most modern units to cure children. Today the situation is very different. The building has become too small for all the patients and both personnel and the children suffer from lack of space. In addition, the premises are in bad condition and the inside air quality is so poor that it is slowing down the healing process.  We want to help.

This year on the Day of the Good Coffee 6th of June 2014 Paulig Group donates 1,5 million euros to Uusi Lastensairaala 2017 foundation for constructing the best children’s hospital in the world.
